These professionals, Sewda said, are essential at every stage of the patient journey. They deliver vital diagnostics that guide treatment decisions, support recovery through rehabilitation, ensure safe medication use, connect families with community supports, and respond to emergencies across vast distances where weather or road conditions can delay access to care.

“In the North, where geography, weather, and distance create unique challenges, your adaptability, teamwork, and innovation embody the spirit of our vision, healthy people and healthy communities,” Sewda said.

The realities of northern Manitoba mean health teams frequently rely on creative problem solving. Staff may travel long stretches between communities, adapt treatment plans for patients living in remote areas, coordinate virtual care options, or assist with discharge planning that must account for transportation limitations or access to local services.

Sewda highlighted that Allied Health staff are key to safe and timely discharges, helping patients return home with the supports they need. This work includes functional assessments, medication reconciliation, and coordinated planning with nurses, physicians, and community partners. These efforts, he noted, reduce hospital readmissions and promote recovery “where it matters most, at home and in community.”
