The Saskatchewan New Democratic Party is accusing the provincial government and the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) of attempting to establish what it describes as a “snitch line” aimed at frontline healthcare workers.

In a news release issued Tuesday, the Opposition NDP said the SHA is seeking proposals for an “Anonymous Reporting Mechanism,” which the authority describes as a service allowing employees or others to anonymously report suspected violations of SHA policies, codes of conduct, or conflict-of-interest rules.

NDP Health Critic Meara Conway said the proposal represents a misplaced priority at a time when healthcare workers are raising concerns about workplace safety, staffing shortages and patient care pressures.

“Instead of listening and addressing the very real safety and workplace concerns our frontline workers are dealing with every single day, the government and SHA leadership are more worried about muzzling workers to save face,” Conway said in the release.

The NDP linked the timing of the proposal to recent public actions by healthcare staff. The tender for the reporting mechanism was posted on January 13, one day after approximately 200 healthcare workers at Regina’s St. Paul’s Hospital publicly called for an immediate safety plan. Last fall, about 450 workers at Saskatoon’s Royal University Hospital also spoke out about workplace conditions.

NDP Labour Critic Nathaniel Teed said healthcare workers have been speaking publicly because they are concerned about patient safety and their own working conditions. He argued the government’s response should focus on addressing those issues rather than discouraging employees from speaking out.

The Opposition also suggested the proposal could conflict with existing whistleblower protections designed to allow healthcare workers to raise concerns without fear of retaliation.

In its release, the NDP criticized the Saskatchewan Party government’s overall management of the healthcare system, citing ongoing staffing challenges and the loss of healthcare workers to other provinces. The party also reiterated its opposition to any move toward greater private sector involvement in healthcare delivery.

The Saskatchewan Health Authority and the provincial government had not publicly responded to the NDP’s claims at the time of the release.
